Letters About Kelley

I met Kelley Bartlett some 10 or 12 years ago at a cutting horse competition and right from the start I knew she was special person. Kelley possessed many characteristics that made her a person that you would not easily forget and you knew you were fortunate to have met.

Kelley was serious about becoming the most proficient horseman she could be. She would study open cutting horse riders at the competitions and then always have many questions after the run, always seeking to improve her own riding.

One of the great characteristics Kelley emulated was her intense concern for her horses well being and happiness. For that matter all animals fell under her huge canopy of compassion and concern.

Kelley invited me up to her beautiful ranch in Wyoming a couple of years ago, I brought my futurity horses up to work cattle and planned to help Kelley and Woody with their stock. You would not believe how great a time we all had, due mostly to Kelley’s preparation and generosity. We had three wonderful meals prepared each day at the chuck wagon set in the most picturesque meadow, where Kelley had many friends stop by to watch a little cutting then stay for a meal and participate in all the story telling. That’s one thing that was so special about Kelley she was the ultimate hostess; she loved to have lots of guests and always made sure they had a great time. She did not know a stranger, everyone she came in contact with benefited so much from her genuine friendly nature. Some afternoons we would saddle up and just go ride on the ranch. We would look for the eagle pair that she knew about and she would point out their nest. Such great wildlife everywhere, Kelley was both knowledgeable and very appreciative of it all.

All of her “projects” reflected her openness and tasteful style. From her home and guest houses she tastefully restored in Wyoming to her Texas ranch house, all had great energy and beauty that was in step with hers.

I can still see her at the cutting competitions in Ft Worth, sitting in the Bartlett box supporting all of her many friends that big smile applauding every run and loving where she was at, that’s how I will always remember my friend Kelley.
